Recovery Options

Recovery options help you regain access to your SingleSign account if you lose your password or MFA device. Setting these up in advance ensures you're never locked out.

Recovery contacts

Recovery contacts are trusted email addresses that can help you regain access to your account. If you're ever locked out, SingleSign can send a recovery link to one of these addresses.

How to set up recovery contacts

  1. Sign in to your SingleSign account at singlesign.com.
  2. Go to Account → Security → Recovery.
  3. Click "Add recovery contact".
  4. Enter a trusted email address (e.g., a family member's email or a secondary email you own).
  5. The contact will receive a confirmation email. They must click the link to accept.
  6. Once confirmed, the recovery contact is active.

Tips for choosing recovery contacts

  • Use an email address you'll always have access to.
  • Choose someone you trust — they'll receive a recovery link, not access to your account.
  • Add at least two recovery contacts for redundancy.

Backup codes

Backup codes are one-time codes you can use to sign in if you lose access to your MFA device (e.g., your phone). Each code can only be used once.

How to generate backup codes

  1. Sign in to your SingleSign account.
  2. Go to Account → Security → MFA → Backup Codes.
  3. Click "Generate new codes".
  4. You'll be shown a set of backup codes (typically 10 codes).
  5. Save these codes securely — they will not be shown again.

How to store backup codes safely

  • Password manager — the most convenient option. Store the codes as a secure note.
  • Printed copy — print the codes and store them in a safe, lockbox, or other secure physical location.
  • Encrypted file — save the codes in an encrypted document on a device you trust.

Do not store backup codes in an unencrypted note on your phone or computer, in your email inbox, or anywhere easily accessible.

Using a backup code

  1. On the SingleSign sign-in page, enter your email and password.
  2. When prompted for your MFA code, click "Use a backup code".
  3. Enter one of your backup codes.
  4. You'll be signed in. That code is now used and can't be reused.
  5. If you're running low on codes, generate a new set immediately.

What if I have no recovery options?

If you've lost your password, your MFA device, and don't have backup codes or recovery contacts:

  • Contact support@singlesign.com for assistance.
  • You may need to verify your identity through an additional process.
  • This is why we strongly recommend setting up recovery options before you need them.
