SingleSign is an identity provider: the account belongs to the person and they bring it to your application, the way "Sign in with Google" works. Auth0, Okta and Firebase Authentication are customer identity platforms: your application owns its own user directory and you run sign-up, storage and recovery inside it. Neither model is better in the abstract — but they are different products, and most comparisons skip past that.
Choose SingleSign when
- You want sign-in working today without designing registration, password reset and account recovery.
- You would rather not hold user credentials at all.
- Your users care that no advertising business sits behind their identity.
- A monthly-active-user meter is a cost you do not want as you grow.
Choose Auth0 when
- You need your own branded sign-up flow and your own user records.
- Enterprise customers require SAML or an enterprise connection.
- You need to run custom code during login — risk checks, claim enrichment, provisioning.
- You are building a B2B product where organisations administer their own members.
Cost
Auth0 publishes a free tier of up to 25,000 monthly active users, with paid B2C plans starting around $35/month and metered overages above the included volume. SingleSign sign-in is free with no monthly-active-user meter.
